Kildare is bordered by the counties of Carlow, Laois, Meath, Offaly, Dublin and Wicklow. Kildare is part of the "Greater Dublin Area", a regional area surrounding Dublin. The county's population has nearly doubled to some 186,000 in 1990-2005. Kildare is famous as a sporting, racing and hunting region. Racing at the Curragh, Punchestown and Naas takes place all year round, boasting some of the biggest meetings in the country’s racing calendar, including the Irish Derby in June. Predominantly rural, Kildare is a beautifully quiet and understated county, with tranquil expanses of green, rich peat lands, lush forests and pretty waterways. And dotted amongst this soft rural idyll are truly beautiful sights.
